Learning Theories
If I were a teacher I would like to teach a technology course because technology is enjoyable for myself and students. My goal would be to make sure that students have fun and learn at the same time. The two theories that I would use would be Cognitive Information Processing Theory and Gagne’s Theory of Instruction. Cognitive Information Processing Theory would help students by reinforcing information to assure that students understand. Gagne’s Theory of Instruction would be very beneficial to student learning overall by gaining attention, providing learning guidance, etc.
Gagne’s Nine Events of Instruction | First Principles |
Gaining Attention | Activation |
Informing the Learner of the Objectives | Activation |
Stimulating recall of prior learning | Activation |
Presenting the stimulus | Demonstration |
Providing learning guidance | Demonstration |
Eliciting performance | Application |
Providing feedback | Application |
Assessing performance | Application |
Enhancing retention and transfer | Integration |
Scaffolding
I would use the scaffolding approach to help students master technology skills by going through the methods with them to insure they understand the assignments. Once students understand I would then assign an assignment to be completed independently.
Using 9.2 table as a template
In the Attention category, I could capture student interest by doing a demonstration of the activity. To stimulate an attitude I could use humor to get a point across. To maintain students’ attention I could ask questions throughout the demonstration. In the Relevance category, I could assign assignments using Microsoft tools to have students create personal resumes, cover letters, and portfolios because it’s something that will benefit the students in the future. For instance, using Microsoft Power Point students could create a Presentation over their career plans and goals. This activity is relevant to their personal needs and will teach students Microsoft Tools in the process. In the Confidence category, I would have students present their presentations and that alone should boost their confidence once presented. In the Satisfaction category, I would grade them and write personal uplifting notes on each student and let each student know how I enjoyed their presentations.
Benefits of engaging in design research
Engaging in research design benefits may include: Valid curriculum planning, updated material, a way to explore new activities for instruction, and to overall become more knowledgeable of your content area.
